Our History
Sea School Costa Blanca was established to provide high-quality, practical RYA training in Spain, with a strong focus on safety, professionalism, and real-world boating skills.
How It Started
The original idea came in 2015, when David’s daughter Samira first suggested starting an RYA powerboat training centre in Spain.
In January 2016, David enrolled on an RYA Powerboat Instructor course to begin the process of building the school.
Training and Preparation
After completing the instructor course, a number of action points were set to build experience and meet the required standards.
These included completing the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship course, attending the RYA Intermediate Powerboat course, and gaining additional experience by sitting in on two Powerboat Level 2 courses.
To commercialise the qualification, further training was completed including RYA First Aid, Sea Survival, Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR), and the ML5 medical.
All requirements were completed by March 2016.
Finding the Right Training Boat
The next step was sourcing a suitable training vessel. After numerous trips and consultations with a UK coding surveyor, a boat named Wasp was found in Poole.
Wasp was transported to Spain and prepared for commercial use.
Coding and Commercial Setup
The process of coding Wasp to UK commercial standards for operation up to 20 miles from a safe haven was a significant undertaking.
This included the installation of safety equipment such as life rafts and life jackets, a full rewire of the electrical system, and the addition of passenger seating.
It proved to be both a steep learning curve and a considerable investment, but it laid the foundations for operating to a professional standard.
Spanish Charter Compliance
Wasp and David were added to the Spanish charter list, enabling full compliance with Spanish law. This was a lengthy and detailed process.
Since 2016, Ana at Aitamar has managed all associated boat documentation, keeping everything up to date and ensuring compliance with any changes in regulations.
Aitamar continues to provide a highly professional service and ongoing support.
Where We Are Today
Sea School Costa Blanca now provides a range of RYA training courses, including Powerboat Level 2, shorebased navigation training, and advanced pathways.
The focus remains on small group training, practical skills, and delivering recognised qualifications to both recreational boaters and those entering the yachting industry.
Looking Ahead
The aim continues to be delivering high-quality training, maintaining strong standards, and helping students gain real confidence on the water.
