Protect the Mediterranean – Protect Posidonia

At Sea School Costa Blanca we don’t just teach safe boating…

🌍 We teach responsible boating.

Many people see underwater seagrass and assume it is simply seaweed.

It isn’t.

🌿 It is called Posidonia oceanica, a protected flowering marine plant found only in the Mediterranean Sea.

💙 Why is Posidonia so important?

🌿 Produces huge amounts of oxygen and is often called “The Lungs of the Mediterranean.”

🐠 Provides food, shelter and nursery areas for hundreds of marine species.

🐙 Supports fish, octopus, seahorses and countless other marine animals.

🏖️ Helps prevent beach erosion by stabilising the seabed.

💧 Keeps our beautiful Mediterranean waters crystal clear.

⏳ Some Posidonia meadows are believed to be thousands of years old.

❌ Once damaged they may take decades—or even centuries—to recover.

⚓ Can I anchor in a designated anchoring area?

Not always.

Even if anchoring is permitted…

❌ You must NEVER drop your anchor or allow your anchor chain to drag across Posidonia.

Always look for:

✅ Sandy seabed

✅ Approved eco-mooring buoys

✅ Areas specifically intended for anchoring

Your anchor may only touch a small area…

⚠️ But your anchor chain can sweep across large areas of Posidonia as your boat swings with wind and tide.

💶 What are the penalties?

Spanish environmental authorities actively protect Posidonia meadows.

👮 Boats may be inspected from patrol vessels or from the air.

💶 Environmental fines can range from hundreds of Euros to many thousands of Euros, depending on the damage caused and the local regulations.

Remember…

Moving your anchor just a few metres onto sand could protect a habitat that has taken centuries to grow.
